Stormwater runoff occurs when precipitation from rainfall or snowmelt flows over the grounds surface. Impervious surfaces like roads, driveways, parking lots, rooftops and other non-porous surfaces do not allow water to soak into the ground. These surfaces increase stormwater runoff to drainage ditches, streams, creeks, detention ponds, and lakes.

Contaminated stormwater runoff is the number one cause of stream impairment in urban areas.

Did you know that if you live in the Town of Monument, your stormwater runoff ends up in Monument Lake, Monument Creek, or in our ground water?

The actions people take will impact the Town and downstream areas, resulting in stream impairment from contaminates that effect, aquatic life, our water quality, and our environment.

Significant numbers of Colorado residents are unaware that stormwater runoff is not treated by conventional treatment methods before entering local creeks, streams, rivers, wetlands, and lakes. 
By practicing healthy household habits, homeowners can keep common pollutants like pesticides, pet waste, grass clippings, and  automotive fluids off the ground and out of stormwater.
Adopt these healthy household  habits and help protect these precious resources.
